Why Some Touch Controls Feel Right And Others Don't

Why Some Touch Controls Feel Right And Others Don't

After enough reviews you start to feel bad controls before you can explain them. Your thumb reaches for a button that isn't quite there, or a swipe registers a moment too late. The best games make all of that disappear.

The single biggest factor is button placement. Controls should sit where your thumbs already rest, not where a designer thought they looked tidy. Games that let you move the buttons yourself almost always feel better, because your hands aren't the same size as anyone else's.

Response time matters just as much. There should be no gap between your tap and what happens on screen. A tiny delay is enough to make an otherwise fun game feel like it's wearing gloves.

Tilt controls are a gamble. They can feel wonderful in a racer and terrible in a platformer, and the deciding factor is usually whether the game lets you adjust sensitivity. If it does, give tilt a real chance; if it doesn't, switch to buttons and don't feel guilty.

My rule of thumb: if you're still thinking about the controls after ten minutes, they've failed. Good ones you forget entirely.
