Which Mobile Genres Are Worth Your Time In 2024

Not every genre belongs on a phone. Some translate beautifully to touch and short sessions; others fight the format the whole way. Here's how we'd rank the big ones after a lot of testing.

Casual and puzzle games are the obvious winners. They're built for short bursts and one-handed play, and the best of them respect your time. If you only game on a commute, this is your home turf.

RPGs and adventures work far better than people expect, as long as the menus are tidy. The long-form storytelling actually suits the quiet moments phones give you. The trade-off is battery, so keep a charger close.

Strategy is a mixed bag. Turn-based games shine because there's no rush; real-time strategy can feel cramped on a small screen when a fight gets busy. A bigger phone or tablet helps a lot here.

Racing and arcade games are pure fun in short doses but the hungriest for battery. Save them for when you're plugged in, and enjoy them for what they are — quick hits of adrenaline, not marathons.
