How We Actually Test A Game Before Reviewing It

June 12, 2026 · Katarzyna Nowak

People sometimes assume reviews get written after a quick play. Not here. Every game spends real time on our phones before anyone types a word, and there's a rough routine we follow.

The first day is just impressions — how it feels to open, how the controls sit, whether the tutorial respects your intelligence. We note first reactions but never score off them, because first days lie.

Then comes the middle stretch, usually days two through five. This is where a game shows its true self: does the loop still hold up, do the systems open up or run dry, does anything start to annoy you. Most of our real opinions form here.

We also test the boring practical stuff on ordinary phones, not flagships. Battery drain, heat, load times, and how it behaves on a weaker device all get checked, because that's what most readers are actually playing on.

Only after all that does a score get decided, usually over a short argument in the team chat. If someone disagrees strongly, we replay the sticking point before publishing.
